NOAA Sea Grant and Fisheries announce 2019 Ecosystem and Population Dynamics Fellows
The Fisheries-Sea Grant Joint Fellowship program supports students pursuing doctoral degrees in population and ecosystem dynamics as well as marine resources economics. The program is a focused workforce development effort to train highly qualified professionals in areas of critical need for NOAA’s science-based approach to fisheries management.
Rosemond’s work is focused on linking ecosystem dynamics to stock assessment and reproductive potential informing fisheries management. Her faculty advisor is Scott Heppell and her NOAA mentors are Jason Cope and Aaron Berger.
OSU student named MANRRS National Officer
Oregon State University graduate student Johannah Hamilton has been elected to serve as the Graduate Student Vice President and is a MANRRS National Officer for the 2019-2020 year. MANRRS is a non-profit organization promoting academic and professional advancement by empowering minorities in agriculture, natural resources, and related sciences. MANRRS has a reach of over 8,000 students and professionals within six Regions, and 55 Collegiate Chapters across 38 states, and Puerto Rico.
As a national officer, Hamilton will represent dozens of universities and members across the nation and serve as an ambassador of MANRRS Oregon State University with leaders in agriculture, agribusiness, local, state and federal government and other professional organizations.
The Graduate Student Vice President is expected to take the lead in developing new collegiate chapters and initiatives to keep Graduate members engaged. Additionally, the Graduate Student Vice President will develop relationships with appointed MANRRS National Sponsors. The Graduate Student Vice President attends or helps to organize social functions to maintain visibility on local chapter campuses.
Creveling receives Young Scientist Award
Jessica “JC” Creveling earned the Young Scientist Award (Donath Medal) and a cash prize of US$10,000 for outstanding achievement as an early career professional from the Geological Society of America. Creveling is an assistant professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. She was nominated by Jerry Mitrovica, Harvard University, for transformative contributions to understanding critical events in Earth’s history through an interdisciplinary combination of comprehensive field geology, elegant, laboratory-based biogeochemistry, and state-of-the-art numerical modeling of geodynamic processes.
Student media podcast named one of best in country
“Making Waves,” a podcast collaboration between KBVR-FM and the Asian & Pacific Cultural Center, is being honored by the College Media Association as one of the best student media podcasts in the country.
The podcast was named a finalist in the Best Podcast category in the 2018-19 CMA Pinnacle Awards, which recognizes the top work in all of college media. “Making Waves” was one of five podcasts nationwide to be honored. The winner will be announced at the ACP/CMA Fall National College Media Convention, held in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 31-Nov. 3.
“Making Waves” was created by OSU students Audrey Kadoya, Erica Suh, and Sophia Kea, and explored topics of identity, race, and the Asian and Pacific Islander experience. KBVR-FM staff, including podcast director Melinda Myers and station manager Roman Battaglia, assisted with the production.
“It was really nice to have the opportunity to be able to share our experiences on a different platform and be able to highlight a variety of subjects,” Kea said. “I think the podcast allowed individuals to learn from each other as well as connect on a common level; through the sharing of personal experiences and the acknowledge of shared values, I think Making Waves was able embody our goal while also being lighthearted and fitting for the OSU community.”
All ten episodes of “Making Waves” can be viewed on KBVR-FM’s Facebook page. The show also airs weekdays at 9 a.m. on KBVR, and can be heard over the air on 88.7 FM in Corvallis or streamed on KBVR’s website.
“Making Waves was our first foray into video podcasting and it’s been a great way to inform people about how Asian-American and Pacific Islanders navigate Oregon State,” Battaglia said. “I’m excited for the awards ceremony and I hope that our work that we’ve done over the past 54 years will show our dedication to the local Corvallis community and to college radio.”
KBVR-FM is the 24/7, student-run radio station at Oregon State University and is a part of Orange Media Network, the student media department at OSU consisting of The Daily Barometer newspaper, DAMchic fashion magazine, Beavers Digest lifestyle magazine, Prism art and literary journal, KBVR-TV and KBVR-FM.
Additionally, OMN’s other mediums and publications were also honored by CMA in the Pinnacle Awards, with The Baro nominated for Best Editorial, KBVR-TV and OMN’s creative video team for best TV Promo/PSA, DAMchic and OMN’s creative design team for Best House Ad, and KBVR-FM named a finalist for best four-year college radio station.
