Hugh F. Jeffrey, Jr., an Oregon State alumnus who later worked at the university, died June 22, 2023 at the Oregon Veterans’ Home in Lebanon. He was 99.
Jeffrey was born Oct. 3, 1923, on a farm near Sylvester, Texas. He served in World War II from 1942-46, in the US Army Signal Corps. For part of the war, he was stationed at Camp Adair, just outside Corvallis. For three years, he served in the China-Burma-India theater of operations. For his honorable service, he was awarded the WWII Victory medal, Asiatic Pacific Service medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre medal, American Theatre Service medal, Good Conduct medal, Meritorious Unit award, and Carbine Sharpshooter badge.
He earned a degree from Oregon State in 1950, and was hired by the university soon after. A significant portion of his professional career was dedicated to the business department at OSU, where he worked for 35 years ultimately serving as the director of business affairs until his retirement in 1985.
Jeffrey celebrated his 99th birthday in October 2022 with more than 40 family and friends at his home. He was predeceased by his wife Carol. He is survived by Dennis and Rachel Jeffrey, Denny and Chris Pastega, Mark and Dee Jeffrey, Doug and JoAnn Jeffrey, Ron and Lori Jeffrey, Dan and Marilyn Eischen, Steve and Karen Jeffrey, Kerry and Sheryl Petersen, as well as 29 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., July 29 at First Baptist Church in Corvallis.
