The Oregon State Police are warning Oregon State University students to be aware of persons using counterfeit money to purchase goods sold via Craigslist. On March 2, an OSU student reported to police that someone attempting to buy a laptop from them via Craigslist used fraudulent money to do so. When confronted, the suspect tried to escape but dropped the laptop when the student pursued them. The suspect is still being sought.
Police are telling OSU students to be cautious when using online websites and platforms to set up exchanges with individuals whom they do not know. It is important to keep the following points in mind:
- Always meet in a neutral, populated location, not at your actual residence.
- If you are able, have a second party (friend) with you.
-
Always do your best to identify the person before the meeting or upon initially meeting.
- If they choose to be on “a first name basis” and refuse to identify themselves, that’s a good sign not to do an exchange with them.
- Be wary of checks from individuals you do not know.
-
If you are doing a large sum exchange, confirm the currency with a local bank before making the exchange.
- Again, if the individual refuses that’s a good sign not to do an exchange with them.
- Educate yourself on large bills and the security features of those bills.
Should you have any concerns or questions regarding this topic or incidents like it, please contact the Oregon State Police, OSU Patrol Office at 200 Cascade Hall or calling their non-emergency number at 541-737-3010.
