Three Ph.D. students picked for Department of Energy program

Three Oregon State University Ph.D. students have been selected for the Department of Energy’s Office of

Science Graduate Student Research program.

Quinn Carvalho (top left photo) and Stephen Kristy (right) of the College of Engineering and Jeremy Lilly of the College of Science are among 65 honorees nationwide, from 47 different universities.

The program’s goal is to prepare graduate students for STEM careers deemed critically important to the Office of Science mission by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories in collaboration with DOE scientists.

The research opportunities advance the students’ thesis work while providing access to the expertise, resources and capabilities available at Department of Energy facilities. Students spend between three and 12 months in the program.

Lilly will work at Los Alamos National Laboratory developing models for Earth systems. Kristy will be at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory pursuing catalysis science with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, neutron scattering and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Carvalho has been assigned to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he will study solid-electrolyte interfaces for electrochemical applications by operando X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
