Oregon Coast Aquarium harbor seal Boots gets diagnosed at OSU veterinary hospital

CORVALLIS, Ore. — This Boots was made for flopping; that’s just what seals do.

Boots, a popular 35-year-old harbor seal from the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, flopped her way into the hearts of doctors and students alike at Oregon State University’s Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital last week when she underwent medical testing that revealed an ulcer in her esophagus.

Bring your furry, feathered and scaled friends to Pet Day, May 6 at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University’s popular Pet Day event returns this year from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 6, and is open to community members of all ages and pets of all shapes and sizes.

The free event is organized by first- and second-year students in OSU’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine and takes place outside the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital at 700 SW 30th St. on the Corvallis campus.

First total ear canal removal surgery performed on Ella the pig at Oregon State veterinary hospital

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Doctors at Oregon State University’s veterinary hospital performed the first known total ear canal ablation surgery on a pig last week, in consultation with a human ear doctor who previously operated on the lead veterinary surgeon’s ear.

Following her operation on Dec. 19, 3-year-old Vietnamese potbelly pig Ella is doing well and is currently recuperating from the procedure at the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital in OSU’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine.

OSU veterinary laboratory partnering with state to boost testing for chronic wasting disease in deer

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Faster and more widespread testing for chronic wasting disease in deer is now possible due to a new partnership between the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Oregon State University’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Chronic wasting disease is spread through animals’ waste and saliva, and infected animals can be contagious for months or years before showing symptoms. It is incurable and affects members of the cervidae family: deer, elk and moose.

OSU research discovers probiotic combination drastically improves oyster larvae survival

NEWPORT, Ore. — Oyster larvae survival rates were significantly boosted by treating them with specific combinations of probiotics, Oregon State University researchers found in a recent study.

With only a one-time application, the probiotics also boosted larval growth, metamorphosis and settlement, meaning that in addition to more oysters surviving past the larvae stage, they also fared better at transitioning to juveniles and anchoring to shells and other surfaces.

NSF grant to OSU researchers will aid development of antibody treatment for dogs with cancer

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Researchers at Oregon State University’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine are moving forward with developing a specialized antibody treatment for dogs with cancer, thanks to a recent grant from the National Science Foundation.

The research team plans for this treatment to be a gentler, more targeted and effective option for addressing canine cancer, just as immunotherapeutics are used in human cancer patients.
