OSU study finds need for better awareness around timing of electricity usage among customers

CORVALLIS, Ore. — A new study published in Nature Energy found that electricity customers often lack awareness of their daily energy-use patterns at home, which could have a serious financial impact as utility companies move toward time-of-use energy pricing models.

If utilities change their pricing structures, consumers need to understand how and when they’re using electricity so they can make informed decisions about billing choices, the study’s authors say.

Conceptual art by Barbara Kruger & Analia Saban coming to Oregon State University in October

CORVALLIS, Ore. — An art exhibition featuring work by conceptual artists Barbara Kruger and Analia Saban will be shown at Oregon State University’s Little Gallery Oct. 3-Dec. 2, with an official opening event from 3:30-5 p.m. Oct. 12.

The “Currency of Language” exhibition will include a series by Kruger and two pieces by Saban. It explores themes of language, consumerism, mass media and varying methods of communication.

Oregon State University’s American Strings series will host musician Keb’ Mo’ for 2 live events

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University’s American Strings series will host rock and blues musician Keb’ Mo’ for a live campus event Oct. 6, and then in Beaverton at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts on Oct. 7.

The American Strings series brings in musicians from a range of genres for an evening of conversation about their music and career along with a brief performance. It is sponsored by OSU’s College of Liberal Arts and hosted by Bob Santelli, OSU director of popular music and performing arts.

OSU Theatre will perform ‘Twelfth Night’ for this year’s Bard in the Quad starting Aug. 4

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University Theatre’s Bard in the Quad will perform “Twelfth Night” next month for its 17th season of staging Shakespeare plays in front of the Memorial Union on the Corvallis campus.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4-7 and 11-14 outdoors on the Memorial Union Quad.

Director Liz Helman said each Bard in the Quad play is chosen based on what feels right for the moment.

People with rare diseases have poor health-related quality of life, OSU study finds

People with rare diseases frequently wait years for a proper diagnosis, have to travel long distances for specialty care and face high out-of-pocket health care expenses, a recent Oregon State University study found.

This combination of challenges in accessing appropriate medical care leads to poor health-related quality of life, low patient satisfaction and high levels of anxiety, depression and stigma, the study concluded.

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University is hosting an international conference focused on women in music June 2-4, held in a virtual and in-person format so presenters, performers and participants can join from all over the world.

“Call and (Her) Response: Music in the Time of Change” is the 2022 conference for the International Alliance for Women in Music. Held every three years, the conference highlights music compositions by women and research about women in music.

OSU study finds ways to “nudge” students to make better use of academic support services

OSU history professor Jacob Darwin Hamblin wins Oregon Book Award for ‘The Wretched Atom’

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University history professor and author Jacob Darwin Hamblin has been awarded the 2021 Oregon Book Award in general nonfiction for his book, “The Wretched Atom: America’s Global Gamble with Peaceful Nuclear Technology.”

He accepted the award April 25 at Literary Arts’ first in-person ceremony since 2019.
