Oct. 3, 2018

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Acclaimed saxophonist Branford Marsalis, a three-time Grammy Award-winner, and his quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 14 in The LaSells Stewart Center on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis.

Marsalis, known for bringing new energy and new audiences to jazz, is a versatile musician who has played with jazz giants including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins. He has played duets with pianists including his boyhood friend, Harry Connick, Jr., and Joey Caldarazzo, the longtime pianist for his quartet.

His classical repertoire includes works by composers Copland, Debussy, Mahler, Milhaud, Vaughan Williams and Villa-Lobos. He has appeared with leading symphony orchestras across the country. Marsalis also spent time touring with rock icon Sting and collaborated with the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby.

He also served as the musical director of “The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno” and hosted National Public Radio’s widely syndicated “Jazz Set.” Marsalis, his father, Ellis Marsalis, Jr., and his brothers are cited as Jazz Masters by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Rounding out the quartet for the performance are Calderazzo, Eric Revis on bass and Justin Faulkner on drums. Their most recent recording is “Four MF’s Playin’ Tunes.”
