CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University Theatre will present “Romeo and Juliet” for the 14th season of the popular Bard in the Quad summer productions in August.
William Shakespeare’s tale of star-crossed lovers will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 1-4 and Aug. 8-11 in the Memorial Union Quad, 2501 SW Jefferson Way, Corvallis.
Set amidst a backdrop of roaring ‘20s glamour, the production tells the story of two families embroiled in a long-standing and violent feud. Sparks fly when their children, Romeo and Juliet, meet by chance at a party and begin a secret and passionate affair. Meanwhile, the tumultuous conflict between the Montagues and Capulets grows deadly causing the young lovers to attempt a dangerous plan to defy the odds and be together.
The production, directed by Elizabeth Helman, is a fast-paced, funny and heartfelt take on a romantic classic, and features fight sequences, dance numbers and jazz music. Ted DeChatelet choreographed the fighting.
The cast features OSU students Thomas R. McKean and Genesis Hansen in the roles of Romeo and Juliet, respectively. Also performing are OSU students Lindsey Esch, playing Mercutio; Alessandra Ferriso as Benvolio; Josh Gasaway as Tybalt; AJ Glessner as Paris; Chloe Grover as Lady Capulet; Samantha Johnson as Rosaline; Mack Powers as Montague; Josh Smith as Balthasar; Zielle Walsh as Lady Montague; and community members Joshua Burlock as Prince; Marina Alvarez as the nurse; and Matt Holland as Capulet. Anthony Eversole, a member of the OSU vocal performance faculty, takes on the role of Friar Laurence.
Bard in the Quad performances are held outside and no seating is provided, creating a fun, laid-back atmosphere. Attendees are encouraged to bring low lawn chairs and/or blankets, warm clothing and food if desired. Hot cocoa and cookies will be available for purchase during intermission.
Seating begins at 6:30 p.m. and no one will be seated prior to that time. The 2019 production is sponsored by Corvallis Club, Pacific Coast Pellets and Block 15.
The production includes the use of pre-recorded amplified gunshot sound effects as well as prop firearms that are clearly marked. The sound effects may also be heard during rehearsals July 27-31.
