Ramesh Sagili, an associate professor of apiculture in Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences, will talk about the status of honey bee health and sustainable beekeeping, Monday, March 11, at Science Pub Corvallis. The presentation will start at 6 p.m. at the Old World Deli, 341 2nd St. in Corvallis.
To promote sustainable apiculture and pollination, Sagili’s research focuses on three primary areas: Honey bee health, honey bee nutrition and honey bee pollination. Most of Oregon State’s apiculture work is collaborative, involving commercial and backyard beekeepers, growers, the general public and universities around the globe.
Honey bees are currently faced with numerous challenges, such as pests, diseases, viruses, poor nutrition and exposure to agrochemicals.
“Healthy and well-nourished honey bees are better equipped to deflect the negative effects of many of these stressors,” says Sagili.
To counteract them, the OSU Honey Bee Lab conducts studies that include monitoring honey bee colonies during crop pollination, improving honey bee diet by understanding the nutritional requirements of bees and developing an understanding of varroa mite populations.
The honey bee lab provides pest and disease diagnostics services to Oregon beekeepers. The apiculture program also operates the Oregon Master Beekeepers Program to provide beekeeping education and training to interested stakeholders.
