Corvallis-Oregon State University Symphony to perform all-Rachmaninoff program Feb. 25

Feb. 17, 2020

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Under the direction of conductor Marlan Carlson, the Corvallis-OSU Symphony will perform an all-Rachmaninoff program at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at The LaSells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26th St., Corvallis.

The concert features three works by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff: “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,” Op. 43 for piano and orchestra, featuring soloist Christopher Yoon, an OSU student; Symphony No. 1 in D minor, Op. 13; and Vocalise, Op. 34, No. 14 for wordless soprano and orchestra featuring OSU voice instructor Amy Hansen.

The “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,” composed in the summer of 1934, is one of only six works Rachmaninoff composed after fleeing Russia in 1917. At the time, Rachmaninoff had largely abandoned composing to pursue his career as a piano soloist to better support his family.

Yoon is a sophomore from Beaverton majoring in bioengineering with a minor in music. He has been playing piano since the age of five. He has won numerous awards, including first prize in the 2018 American Protégé Concerto Competition, for which he won the opportunity to perform a solo at Carnegie Hall. Yoon also performs as cellist in the orchestra.

Hansen is a graduate of Corvallis High School. She graduated with honors from Oberlin College Conservatory and earned her master’s degree in music at Indiana University. She has been a resident artist with the Portland Opera, a Metropolitan Opera Auditions regional finalist, an Ellen Faull Gordon vocal competition winner and a Petri grant recipient.
