The Great Move Out, a program to help students recycle instead of discard unwanted items, begins in June as students move out of their residences.
“With the stress of finals combined with having to move out, it can be difficult to balance sorting through and figuring out where to take the stuff you can’t take home with you,” said Lily Butler, student outreach assistant for Campus Recycling and Surplus Property. “This event makes it easy for both on- and off-campus students to donate and divert materials that would otherwise go to the dump. Plus, if you donate or volunteer, you can feel good knowing that you are helping our local community, economy, and the environment.”
OSU and the Grace Lutheran Church will host a donation drive with There will be drop-off sites both on campus and off campus at Grace Lutheran Church. Last year, OSU collected more than 32,000 pounds of donations.
The Great Move Out allows students living both on and off-campus to donate items they no longer need or cannot take with them, while also diverting material that would otherwise go to the landfill. Discarded items will benefit local non-profits and other charity organizations. Items accepted for donation include: clothing, unopened and non-perishable food, toiletries, household items like décor or lamps, electronics (broken or otherwise), and furniture.
In the residence halls, donations may be put into donation bins which will be located on the ground floor of every residence hall (expect for in Halsell Hall and the International Living-Learning Center, where the binsit will be on upper floors). Students can request bags from the residence hall front desk to sort and carry items. Larger items that do not fit in hall lobbies, such as wood bed loft kits and furniture, may be set next to dumpsters outside. However, donated bikes should be kept inside by the donation bins.
A donation drop-off point will be located in the parking lot of the Grace Lutheran Church (435 N.W. 21st St..) on Friday, June 14 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. A range of items, including mattresses, furniture, electronics, office/school supplies, books, and kitchen and household wares, will be accepted on site.
Due to the high volume of donations that are anticipated, Campus Recycling and Surplus Property are seeking volunteers to assist with the -campus drive by sorting incoming items or accompanying the crew to collect donated items and recyclables from the residence halls. Volunteers may sign up for various shifts between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. from June 10-19. Volunteer training will be provided on site.
The Great Move Out is a collaboration between OSU Campus Recycling, Surplus Property, University Housing and Dining Services, Office of Student Life, Republic Services, the City of Corvallis, and local nonprofits. Additional information on both drives as well as how to volunteer or donate items may be found at https://fa.oregonstate.edu/recycling/events-and-opportunities/great-move-out.
