Oregon State names vice provost for student affairs

May 13, 2019

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Dan Larson, a longtime leader at Oregon State University who has helped guide extensive student success efforts inside and outside the classroom, on Monday was named the university’s vice provost for student affairs.

Larson has served in the role of interim vice provost since September 2017 and will transition immediately to the permanent position.

“Dan Larson has an outstanding record of positive impact at OSU and is a proven leader and contributor to university initiatives and priorities,” said Edward Feser, Oregon State’s provost and executive vice president. “He ably has guided a large and complex division to support students in their development and educational persistence to degree completion, and in their preparation and advancement to career or graduate education.”

Larson oversees a student affairs organization with a $130 million annual budget and a staff of about 650 people. The organization includes residential life, counseling and health services, recreational sports, dining services, diversity and cultural engagement, student leadership and involvement programs, student life programs and services, the student union, career development, youth safety and compliance, academic achievement programs and international support services. Larson also serves as a member of the provost’s senior leadership team and university cabinet.

“Serving as the interim vice provost for student affairs over the past 20 months has been an incredible experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve in this capacity,” Larson said.  “My colleagues in the division and across OSU are exceptional, caring professionals, and I am excited to maintain our focus and momentum in service to students.”

As interim vice provost for student affairs, Larson’s accomplishments include:

  • Co-chairing the Undergraduate Student Success Committee;
  • Reallocating financial resources to enhance service to historically underrepresented students;
  • Increasing focus on student mental health;
  • Developing a fundraising plan with the OSU Foundation for scholarships, experiential learning and students in recovery from substance abuse; and
  • Establishing a Division of Student Affairs engagement plan that includes a leadership institute for aspiring student affairs leaders.

Prior to his interim role as vice provost, Larson served as the associate vice provost and interim dean of student life, and associate vice provost and executive director of University Housing and Dining Services. He joined Oregon State in 1996 as a graduate student in the College Student Services Administration program.

Larson received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Western Oregon State College (now Western Oregon University) and a master’s degree in college student services and administration from Oregon State University.
