CORVALLIS, Ore. – “Natural Deceptions,” an exhibition of photographs by Seattle artist Natalie Krick, will be on display Nov. 5 through Nov. 29 in the Fairbanks Gallery at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
A reception will take place in the gallery from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5. It is free and open to the public.
Krick’s photographs are fueled by her conflicting attraction and aversion to images of women in popular culture. Using photographs of her mother, her sister and herself, often in provocative poses on colorful, layered backgrounds, she mimics the imagery found in fashion magazines and celebrity portraits.
“My mother, my sister and I perform for each other, for the camera and ultimately for you,” Krick said. “In the harsh revealing light of the flash, we pose, we masquerade, until our unstable identities begin to merge. We impersonate each other and ourselves, emulating the imagery that has taught us how to be beautiful.”
The resulting photographs are complex, optical illusions that challenge the viewer to explore identity, heredity, aging and the temptation and degradation of the feminine identity found in popular culture.
Krick received her bachelor of fine arts in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York and her master of fine arts in photography from Columbia College, Chicago.
She has recently exhibited at Aperture Foundation and The Museum of Sex in New York City and at SAC Gallery in Seattle. In 2015, she was awarded an Individual Photographer’s Fellowship from the Aaron Siskind Foundation and in 2017 she received the Aperture Portfolio Prize.
Her first book, “Natural Deceptions,” was published by Skylark Editions in 2017. Her photographs reside in the collection at the Museum of Contemporary Photography and in various private collections.
The Fairbanks Gallery is located in Fairbanks Hall, 220 SW 26th Street, on the OSU main campus. It is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., with hours extended until 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month for the Corvallis Art Walk.
