CORVALLIS, Ore. – “Seeing is Deceiving,” an exhibition of works by artists Granite Calimpong and Lucy Copper, will be on display Oct. 7 through Oct. 30 in the Fairbanks Gallery of Art at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
Calimpong and Copper are recent graduates of the master of fine arts program in the School of Art, Art History and Design at the University of Washington. Their work is meant to question visual perceptions of reality.
Calimpong has studied the physical nature of sight and the peculiarities of vision in relation to perception. He is interested in visual illusions created by combinations of color and form and how context dictates experience when viewing art.
Copper’s time-based installation is a safety zone and a stasis zone, wherein time is stopped, life processes are halted and the figures flail around, encased in temporary shields. The forms are constructed from high-tech personal protective equipment and are animated by fans on a timer to simulate repetitive lifelike actions such as breathing, swaying, flailing, lurching upright and falling down.
Fairbanks Gallery of Art is OSU’s professional art gallery. Its mission is to initiate, produce, and present scholarly visual art exhibitions to advance contact and dialogue with original works of art as an indispensable part of a liberal arts education.
The gallery is located in Fairbanks Hall, 220 SW 26th St., Corvallis. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and until 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month for the Corvallis Art Walk.
