CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University Opera will present performances of Giacomo Puccini’s “La Rondine” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8, and at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at Ashbrook Independent School, 4045 SW Research Way, Corvallis.
The performances are directed by Anthony Eversole. “La Rondine” is originally set in 1920’s Paris. Act 1 introduces the audience to the wealthy Rambaldo, his mistress Magda, the poet Prunier and Lisette, who is Magda’s maid. Eventually, the group heads to Bullier’s restaurant to pass the evening where they meet Ruggero, a newcomer to Paris.
Act 2 takes place at Bullier’s restaurant, filled with artists, students and young adults. Magda and Ruggero talk and dance, and realize they have fallen in love. Eventually they leave together to start a new life.
In Act 3, Magda and Ruggero have been living in the Riviera, though their money is beginning to run short. Ruggero continues to paint an idyllic picture of his family’s country home, and writes his mother for consent to his and Magda’s marriage. The heartbroken Magda confesses that she can be his mistress but never his wife and, leaving the devasted Ruggero behind, returns to her old life.
