Pianist Garrick Ohlsson performs at Oregon State University Feb. 18

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Pianist Garrick Ohlsson will perform at Oregon State University as part of the Corvallis-OSU Piano International Steinway Piano Series at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, in the Austin Auditorium at The LaSells Stewart Center, 875 S.W. 26th St., Corvallis.

His Corvallis program includes three major Romantic and Late-Romantic works: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata in C minor, Op. 13 “Pathetique;” Alexander Scriabin’s Sonata No. 5, O. 53; and Franz Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat Major, D. 960 Op. posth.

Ohlsson, of White Plains, New York, has a repertoire including more than 80 concertos, standard solo works ranging the entire piano repertoire and modern works commissioned specifically for him. During the 2017-2018 concert season, Ohlsson is performing as a soloist with the major symphony orchestras of Philadelphia, Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas, Miami, Toronto, San Francisco, Vancouver and others. Ohlsson is especially known for his interpretation of works by Polish composer Frédéric Chopin.

He won the gold medal at the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition, the first and only American to accomplish this feat. Since then he has been awarded first prizes at the Busoni Competition and the Montreal Piano Competition.

He was the 1994 recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize, an award given annually to American musicians in recognition of their outstanding achievement in classical music, and won a GRAMMY Award in 2008 for his recording of Beethoven Piano Sonatas.

Tickets for the Corvallis show are $25 in advance or $28 at the door. Advance tickets are available online at corvallispiano.org or at Grass Roots Books & Music in Corvallis. Students ages 8-18 and all college students with valid ID will be admitted free.
