Top Oregon family businesses to be honored by OSU College of Business at virtual event May 7

PORTLAND, Ore. — Several Oregon family businesses will be honored at the Oregon State University College of Business’ 2021 Excellence in Family Business Awards ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 7. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held virtually.

Lithia Motors, a family-owned enterprise that grew from one car dealership in Ashland, Oregon, in 1946 to more than 200 nationwide today, will receive the Dean’s Award for Family Business Leadership. Sid DeBoer, chairman and founder of Lithia Motors, will speak at the event.

OSU College of Business offers free tax preparation services through IRS partnership

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State University College of Business Center for Advancing Financial Education is offering free tax preparation services to low- and middle-income individuals and families through a partnership with the IRS.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program is an IRS initiative to support free tax preparation service for those who qualify. Volunteers including IRS-certified accounting students, university staff and community members, prepare taxes for participants.

Narcissists don’t learn from their mistakes because they don’t think they make any, study shows

BEND, Ore. — When most people find that their actions have resulted in an undesirable outcome, they tend to rethink their decisions and ask, “What should I have done differently to avoid this outcome?”

When narcissists face the same situation, however, their refrain is, “No one could have seen this coming!”

In refusing to acknowledge that they have made a mistake, narcissists fail to learn from those mistakes, a recent study from Oregon State University – Cascades found.

Excellence in Family Business Award winners named by Oregon State College of Business

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sisters Coffee Company of Sisters, Heritage Specialty Foods of Portland and CRB Manufacturing of Clackamas have been selected as this year’s winners of the Oregon State University College of Business’s Excellence in Family Business Awards.

They are among nearly a dozen family businesses that will be honored at a ceremony Nov. 21 at The Nines Hotel in Portland.

Location-based data on social commerce platforms can provide insights for business decisions

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Data from social commerce websites can provide essential information to business owners before they make decisions that could determine whether a new venture succeeds or fails, a study from Oregon State University shows.

Social commerce sites such as the review and recommendation site Yelp collect large amounts of data from a variety of users, including customer opinions, geographical distribution of businesses in a given area, and customer “check-ins” that provide a sense of the foot traffic. 

Oregon State University names interim dean of College of Business

CORVALLIS, Ore. – James Coakley, who has nearly 30 years of experience as an administrator and professor in Oregon State University’s College of Business, has been named interim dean of the college, OSU Provost and Executive Vice President Ed Feser announced Tuesday.

This new appointment becomes effective Aug. 1. Coakley will replace Mitzi Montoya, who was recently named provost and executive vice president of Washington State University.
