In L.A., he met poet-lyricist Exene Cervenka and guitar player Billy Zoom and formed the band X. The band released six studio records, several singles and one live record between 1978 and 1993.

He has recorded eight solo records with numerous singers and instrumentalists, including Patty Griffin, Dan Auerbach, Aimee Mann, Don Was, Kathleen Edwards and Greg Liesz.
