CORVALLIS, Ore. – American punk music icon John Doe will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the Majestic Theatre, 115 S.W. 2nd St, Corvallis. The performance and talk, hosted by Bob Santelli, is part of the Oregon State University College of Liberal Arts’ American String Series.
Doe, a singer, songwriter, actor, poet and guitarist is the co-founder of the renowned Los Angeles punk band “X.” His most recent solo album is “The Westerner” and he is also the author of “Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk,” published in 2016. The audiobook version of the book was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album.
Born John Nommensen Duchac in 1953, Doe arrived in Los Angeles in 1977 after graduating from Antioch College of Baltimore in 1975 and stints working as a roofer and an aluminum siding mechanic. In L.A., he met poet-lyricist Exene Cervenka and guitar player Billy Zoom and formed the band X. The band released six studio records, several singles and one live record between 1978 and 1993.
He has recorded eight solo records with numerous singers and instrumentalists, including Patty Griffin, Dan Auerbach, Aimee Mann, Don Was, Kathleen Edwards and Greg Liesz. He has appeared in more than 50 films and television productions, with notable roles in “Road House,” “Georgia,” “Roadside Prophets,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Pure Country” and “Roswell.”
In addition to performing with The Knitters, recent side projects include work with Jill Sobule and The Sadies. Doe continues to write poetry and has taught poetry workshops. He currently lives north of San Francisco, California.
The American Strings series brings renowned artists from around the U.S. to Corvallis and Oregon State University for an in-depth look at how and why stringed instruments play such a profound role in American music. The series is hosted by Santelli with sponsorship from the OSU College of Liberal Arts and the Majestic Theatre.
