Corvallis-OSU Symphony annual holiday concert set for Nov. 30

Nov. 21, 2018

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra will present its annual holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30.

The concert, conducted by Marlan Carlson, will be held in the Austin Auditorium at The LaSells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26th Street, Corvallis.

The orchestra will continue its celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday with the composer’s “Chichester Psalms,” written for orchestra, countertenor soloist and chorus. The three-movement work premiered in 1965 and draws its Hebrew text from Psalms 108, 100, 23, 2, 131 and 133.

Bernstein wrote “Chichester Psalms” during a sabbatical from his role as music director of the New York Philharmonic. The contemporary, almost jazz-like qualities of the piece, combined with unusual metric schemes and tuneful melodies are used in the composer’s plea for reconciliation and unity throughout the world.

Other works in the program include highlights from Tchaikovksy’s “Nutcracker” ballet; a suite of Hanukkah melodies arranged by James Stephenson; Viennese polkas; a holiday sing-along and more.

Tickets are $22, $27 and $32 for reserved seating. They are available online at www.cosusymphony.org. Up to three kindergarten- through eighth-grade students, accompanied by a ticketed adult, and all high school and college students with ID, may be given free general admission tickets at the door starting one hour prior to the concert, subject to availability.
