CORVALLIS, Ore. – The flamenco guitar and dance ensemble Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana will perform its latest production, “Voces del Sur,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
The performance is part of “SAC Presents,” a visual and performing arts events series presented by the School of Arts and Communication in OSU’s College of Liberal Arts.
Flamenco Vivo has premiered more than 25 original works, offering commissions to numerous flamenco artists from Spain and the U.S. The troupe was founded by Carlota Santana, an internationally renowned flamenco and Spanish dance artist and educator, and Roberto Lorco in 1983. After Lorca died in 1987, Santana continued their work.
In the decades since, she has created the company’s innovative arts-in-education program, integrating Spanish dance and culture with academic curricula, and has pioneered bilingual education initiatives targeted to immigrant populations, as well as other programs addressing the special needs of students with disabilities.
She has also led the troupe’s growth as one of this country’s most successful flamenco companies, with a mission to promote flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic heritage.
“Voces del Sur” is comprised of seven dances meant to give the audience a glimpse into the mysterious land of Andalucía, the Southern region of Spain known as the “cradle of flamenco.” Andalucía is home to a diverse group of cultures, each with its own language and traditions. Arabic, Gypsy and Sephardic Jewish influences have blended together over the centuries.
Tickets are $30 and $35 in advance, or $35 and $40 at the door. All seats are reserved. The performance will be held in the LaSells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26th St., Corvallis. To purchase tickets, visit https://liberalarts.oregonstate.edu/performance-and-visual-arts-events or call 541-737-5592.
