OSU Film Shows Polish Poster Art Through New Eyes

Sept. 30, 2009

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's Center for the Humanities will present a film on Polish poster art at the Autzen House on Monday, May 22. The screening begins at 4 p.m.

The 45-minute film, by OSU assistant professor of art Andrea Marks, a research fellow at the center, details the history of the Polish art form.

"Freedom on the Fence" will look at Polish posters from World War II through the fall of Communism in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The documentary looks at the history of the art form through the revolutionary role posters played in the social, political and cultural life of Poland.

Marks' film delves into the history of Polish poster art through interviews as well as contemporary and archival film footage of the country. "Freedom on the Fence" includes an interview with Henryk Tomaszweski, considered by many to be the father of the Polish poster art movement. The film also features commentaries from both American and Polish scholars on the significance of the Polish poster as a cultural icon.

To provide a sense of place, Marks mixed modern-day footage of Warsaw and Krakow with footage from the Polish National Film Archive. OSU music professor Michael Coolen contributed to the documentary with an original music score.

The screening, at 811 S.W. Jefferson Ave in Corvallis, will be followed by a discussion. The event is free and open to the public.
