CORVALLIS, Ore. – Poet Clemens Starck and novelist Peter Nathaniel Malae will read at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, in the Valley Library Rotunda on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis. A book signing will follow.
Starck’s most recent book, “Cathedrals & Parking Lots: Collected Poems,” was published in 2018 by Empty Bowl. His previous collections of poetry include “Studying Russian on Company Time,” “China Basin,” “Traveling Incognito,” “Rembrandt, Chainsaw,” “Old Dog, New Tricks” and “Journeyman’s Wages,” which won the 1996 Oregon Book Award and the William Stafford Memorial Poetry Award from the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association. He lives outside Dallas in the mid-Willamette Valley.
Malae’s recent novel, “Son of Amity” was published by Oregon State University Press in 2018. His previous novels include “Our Frail Blood” and “What We Are,” which was a winner of the San Francisco Foundation’s Joseph Henry Jackson Award, a New York Times Editor’s Choice and a Pacific Northwest Booksellers finalist.
Malae is also the author of the story collection “Teach the Free Man,” which was a finalist for the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Award and named a notable book by the Story Prize. His 2015 play, “The Question,” was awarded the Oregon Literary Arts Fellowship for drama and he is a former John Steinbeck, MacDowell Colony and Arts Council Silicon Valley Fellow. He lives in western Oregon.
The reading is part of the 2018-2019 Literary Northwest Series, which brings accomplished writers from the Pacific Northwest to OSU. The series is sponsored by the MFA Program in Creative Writing at OSU, with support from the OSU Libraries and Press, the OSU School of Writing, Literature, and Film, the College of Liberal Arts, Kathy Brisker and Tim Steele and Grass Roots Books and Music.
The event is free and open to the public. The Valley Library is located at 201 SW Waldo Place, Corvallis.
